Global Renewables M&A Hits $80 Billion in First Nine Months of 2026 as Battery Storage Deals Surge, Enerdatics Reports

The data from the period points to a more selective market, with private equity leading large acquisitions and buyers paying a premium for contracted revenue.

Buyers are looking closely at what makes a portfolio deliverable: grid access, development capability and a credible route to contracted revenues.”

HOUSTON, TX, UNITED STATES, October 29, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Global renewables M&A reached approximately $80 billion in the first nine months of 2026, up around 15% year on year, according to a report released by Enerdatics. Large private equity-led acquisitions in North America and rising battery storage activity drove the growth.

The Renewables M&A Outlook & Analysis Q3 2026 Report finds that transaction activity increased approximately 7%, trailing growth in reported value. Buyers increasingly favored storage platforms, projects with secured grid access and assets backed by predictable revenues.

“The headline growth masks a more selective market,” said Kshitij N R (Kay), Partner at Enerdatics. “Buyers are looking closely at what makes a portfolio deliverable: grid access, development capability and a credible route to contracted revenues. Those factors are shaping both acquisition appetite and the value sellers can realize.”

North America: Private equity and storage drive $61 billion in deal value

North America recorded approximately $61 billion in reported deal value, with private equity driving around half of acquisitions. Battery energy storage system (BESS) deal activity increased 75%, while solar-plus-storage activity rose 65%. Standalone solar activity remained broadly steady.

Storage featured in 95% of corporate and platform power deals tracked in the region, up from 71% a year earlier. “Storage has become central to North American platform acquisitions,” said Mohammad Thousif, Lead Analyst at Enerdatics. “Buyers are acquiring development teams, grid positions and pipelines that can respond to growing power demand. The opportunity is substantial, but converting those pipelines into contracted, operating assets remains the critical test.”

Europe: Contracted wind commands a premium as buyers link payments to project milestones

European BESS activity nearly doubled year on year to 109 deals, with the UK and Germany leading by transacted capacity. Solar activity declined approximately 20%, while wind activity remained broadly steady. Enerdatics’ analysis of transactions since January 2025 estimates that contracted operating onshore wind assets commanded a valuation premium of approximately 45% over merchant-exposed assets.

Buyers also increasingly used contingent payments to manage development risk. These arrangements featured in 16 of 24 European development-stage deals with disclosed terms in the first nine months of 2026, equivalent to 67%, compared with 35% a year earlier. “Revenue certainty affects both the price an asset attracts and the terms on which a buyer will transact,” said Priyanka Khot, Senior Analyst at Enerdatics. “For development-stage sellers, securing a headline valuation is only part of the outcome. The milestones attached to payment determine how much execution risk they retain and when they receive the proceeds.”

Asia-Pacific and Latin America: Activity diverges as curtailment increases buyer scrutiny

Asia-Pacific transaction activity increased approximately 20%, led by India, with Australian wind and storage also contributing. Latin American activity declined approximately 55% as curtailment in Brazil and Chile made buyers more selective. The report’s 2027 outlook identifies storage as a major driver of future acquisitions across regions. It highlights contracted European batteries, North American storage platforms and project stake sales to fund construction in India and Australia. In Latin America, it expects storage contracts to support deals, starting with Brazil’s first battery storage auctions in December 2026.

The report includes regional transaction analysis, precedent deals, developer premium insights and valuation benchmarks.
